<p>The 120th FS is the operational flying unit of the wing and has had the F-16C assigned since September 1992. Another unit organized during World War I, the 120th was called to active duty from January 1941 until November 1943. In June 1946 the 120th Fighter Squadron became first National Guard flying unit to receive federal recogniton in a post-war reorganization. The unit was based at Denver Airport with the P-51D. The squadron was mobilized for two months during mid-1951, although most personnel had already volunteered for service in Korea. The unit became the 120th FIS and equipped with the F-80C in 1953, forming the 'Minutemen' aerial display team. Conversion to the F-86E began in 1958 and to the F-86L two years later. In January 1961 unit became a Tactical Fighter Squadron when it re-equipped with the F-100C. A second period of activation took place between October 1961 and August 1962 for the Berlin crisis. The 140th TFG was formed in October 1962. Mobilized for the third time in January 1968 and following relocation to three active bases in USA, the unit was deployed in May to Phan Rang AB, South Vietnam. The squadron flew more than 5,000 combat sorties before being returned to federal control in April 1969. The F-100C was exchanged for the F-100D in 1971, and the A-7D in April 1974. The 140th TFG was changed to Wing level in December 1974. The squadron won the Top Gun Award at the 1981 Gunsmoke Competition held at Nellis AFB. Detachment 1 of 120th TFS organized to operate four CT-43A navigation trainers on behalf of Headquarters Air National Guard West. This unit was replaced by the 200th Airlift Squadron in March 1992.
